When I went outside last night, I turned to my husband and said “I think Winter is officially here!” Most of the golden leaves have fallen from our stately Cottonwoods, and I find myself succumbing to a vest or jacket when I go outside (I really hate to wear a coat!). That, and the change back to Mountain Standard Time, tell me that it is time to bring out the essential oils that help me through this time of year.
First and foremost…let’s look at the essences that are imbued with a lot of light. My first choice, when I am missing the long, sun-lit days of summer and early fall, is Bergamot. When I think of a light-filled essence, She fills my mind. Citruses, as a family of essential oils, are known for their ability to lift our spirits and transform a sullen or discouraged mood into a sunny one. Bergamot stands out as one that evokes the carefree feelings of childhood and breezes us past our adult inhibitions or fears into a space of light-heartedness and spontaneity. One of my favorite authors, Gabriel Mojay, reports that Bergamot oil’s ability to relieve nervous depression and anxiety has been well-documented by an Italian researcher, Paolo Rovesti, who noted important psychological benefits for patients under psychiatric care (Aromatherapy for Healing the Spirit).
Other essences that help people who suffer from SAD (Seasonal Affective Disorder), or who just prefer the light and warmth of Spring & Summer (in climates where there are four discernible seasons), include Blood Red Orange, Grapefruit, and Mexican Lime. Grapefruit is additionally blessed with the ability to ease the internal discord that can be caused by time changes associated with travel or seasonal adjustments. Several drops on the sole of each foot a day or two in advance of the event, the day of the event, and then for a day or two after, usually results in a significant reduction of the tiredness and low energy that can accompany such changes.
Second, some essences do have the ability to warm us…literally and “figuratively”…by that I mean, warm us energetically. I remember years ago when I was in the corporate world, I had a boss who LOVED to keep the conference rooms at frigid temperatures (like, high 50s) because he felt that it kept people alert. Everybody groused about it, but just brought sweaters and jackets to the meetings. I would go to the ladies room a few minutes before a meeting and put several drops of Cinnamon Bark on the sole of each foot. I would massage it in, slip my shoes back on, and no one was the wiser. I smelled great, and the Cinnamon literally kept me warm. Sometimes I would excuse myself for a few minutes and refresh the Cinnamon Bark, but usually a few drops would warm me for hours. Palmarosa is another warming essence, and it is not nearly as hot as Cinnamon Bark, which you have to use with care and mindfulness. Palmarosa can be applied to the shoulders, knees, elbows…She is great at warming joints and increasing our flexibility.
Essences of Ginger and Cardamon Seed (Green) are great at moving Chi or energy in the body. I like to apply 5-7 drops on my solar plexus, and then put a few drops in my liter water bottle. Within minutes, you can feel the energy begin to move in your body, and you become more alert and less tired or sluggish.
So, essential oils can be a great boon to us this time of year. And, since we are supposed to have a very cold and blustery winter this year, according to the Almanac, we may be in particular need of their help! So, enjoy the waning days of Fall, and prepare yourself for the winter months to come. While many of the plants are dormant, their essences are vibrant and available to us via essential oils.
